Phonemic Awareness Phoneme awareness is the ability to perceive the individual sounds in our language that make up words. It includes the ability to move sounds around. It is an essential pre-reading skill and is required for spelling throughout school years.    
Reading - Decoding Decoding is figuring out what the word says. Included in this section is word recognition - connecting what the word says to word meaning.    
Reading Fluency Reading rate and accuracy make up reading fluency. Click the link for a chart of oral reading rates by grade level. Silent reading is usually faster.    
Reading Comprehension Believed to be heavily connected to oral language, reading comprehension is the most complex aspect of reading. Students who have difficulty with decoding need that instruction before they can begin comprehending.
