A business woman of twenty years, Susan Long became a reading teacher because her own son experienced early reading problems. As a parent, she was baffled when a primary grade teacher admitted that her son might be one of those kids who “just doesn’t learn to read.”

After several years of monitoring her own son's reading interventions, Susan took training in Lindamood-Bell Phoneme Sequencing and Orton Gillingham methods. She eventually returned to school to become a certified teacher and subsequently received her Masters degree in Reading from the University of Missouri at Kansas City.  Her reading training includes more than 100 hours of supervised practice in each method.

Susan has maintained a ten year private practice in reading instruction while working in public schools for seven years as a reading and special education teacher. In a public-school setting, Susan taught hundreds of children. Not all of them required multi-sensory, analytic phonics and she learned how to provide appropriate assessment in order to group students based on their learning needs. She now helps other teachers understand how to assess, group, and teach students with dyslexia and other reading disorders.

Susan is a past president for the Learning Disabilities Association of Missouri and currently serves on the Executive Board for the Kansas / Missouri Branch of the International Dyslexia Association. She has presented many training and in-service sessions for school districts and at conferences on the topic of multi-sensory reading instruction and assessment. She has also served as a parent advocate supporting the needs of students with dyslexia (and other learning disabilities) and their families
